Welcome to India Gloria Jeans Coffee

US bases coffee business, Gloria Jeans Coffee is expanding the business to India. It is setting up its second global coffee roasting and blending unit here. According to sources, Gloria Jean’s has finalised on a couple of locations and will tie up with Indian farmers to procure Arabica beans, which will be blended with imported coffee beans from Indonesia and Ethiopia.

The US-based coffee chain, which has more than half of its 770 outlets in Australia, announced on Monday that it was entering India through a tie-up with Citymax India, the hospitality and restaurant arm of Dubai-based Landmark Retail. Citymax will invest around Rs 50 crore for opening 100 stores over the next four years.

Citymax India CEO Ravi Saxena says, “We plan to set up 400 cafes overall. Gloria Jean’s cafés will be bundled with Citymax’s PolyNation food courts and will also be a standalone.” Mr Saxena however declined to speak about Gloria Jean’s plans to source from India.

Recently, a team from Landmark Retail had also gone to Australia to study the processes of the coffee chain. Citymax has also invested an additional Rs 2 crore for research and training in food and beverages, according to Mr Saxena.
The first Gloria Jean’s will be opened in Mumbai early next year.

According to Harish Bijoor Consults founder Harish Bijoor, a coffee shop like Gloria Jean’s would require an investment of around Rs 80 lakh. Gloria Jean’s will also retail roasted coffee under the brand name GJC, and Mr Saxena added that Citymax was looking at coffee vending machines and wholesale as an option, since they had the master franchise for Gloria Jean’s.

Gloria Jean’s cafes will be of the size of 1,000 sq ft on an average and will open in the metros first. There will also be a few 2,000 sq ft flagship stores as well as smaller 600 sq ft kiosks. The coffee chain would be positioned a notch higher than Barista and Café Coffee Day, and on a par with Costa Coffee, which has entered India through a tie-up with the RK Jaipuria Group.
